General Code of Conduct
- Our volunteers are a reflection of our community. Volunteers should treat athletes, other volunteers, and racecourse neighbors with the utmost courtesy and respect. Please pickup after yourself, keep the noise to a minimum during the early hours, and refrain from using profanity.
- The use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco are prohibited while volunteering.
- Please check in with a volunteer coordinator upon arrival and when your shift is done. During your shift, follow instructions from your volunteer coordinator. If you need to leave early in the case of an emergency, please let your volunteer coordinator know.
- When you sign up, you commit to being present for that specific shift(s) during the entire length of that shift(s). If it is the day of your scheduled shift and you find you cannot make it, please be considerate and notify the volunteer coordinator right away.
- Familiarize yourself with the race prior to your shift–some volunteer positions may need to assist answering questions for runners and spectators. You can do this by reading the Scheels Healthy Human Race Participant Guide (link to this information)
Age Guidelines
- All children must be registered as volunteers.
- For the most enjoyable experience, we encourage that children be at least 14; some jobs allow children 10+, with the supervision of a parent or guardian.
- Groups of children should be supervised by a parent/guardian at an adult to child ratio of 10:1, respectively.
Attire
- Many volunteer areas require that you stand throughout your shift and work outside in any weather. Please check the weather and dress accordingly. We recommend dressing in layers as the weather can change quickly and wearing comfortable shoes.
- Volunteers will receive a volunteer t-shirt which should be worn during your entire shift. Volunteers are encouraged to dress up their volunteer outfit with fun accessories as long as it doesn’t inhibit volunteering (i.e., straw hula skirts, funky wigs, neon gloves/socks, etc).
Safety
- Whatever your role on race day, if you see a suspicious person, object or vehicle along or near the racecourse, report the sightings to 9-1-1 or notify law enforcement personnel.
- A secure area for volunteer belongings will not be available; we recommend bringing only necessary items. Scheels Healthy Human Race is not responsible for any items lost or stolen.
- Do not store, hide or leave any personal items, backpacks, packages or clothing along or near the racecourse; including the start and finish line areas.
- Do not store or hold bags or packages for someone you don’t know.
Items to bring
- Volunteers are encouraged to bring water and snacks.
- If you need your hours to be counted for school, work, or other organization—you must bring a copy of your program’s volunteer tracking sheet for our captains to fill in. Scheels Healthy Human Race will not be providing a tracking sheet for hours or be able to confirm hours after race day. In order to have your hours tracked, you will need to check-in and check-out with the volunteer coordinator to receive official hours volunteered.

(Click on each question to expand.)
How do I sign up?
Individuals and groups can sign up to volunteer here (link to SignUp Genius)
Online volunteer registration opens June 1, 2021 and will close on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at 11:59 PM Central Time.
What volunteer roles are available?
Scheels Healthy Human Race weekend has a variety of volunteer roles available throughout race weekend for individuals, groups, and families! A list of opportunities are on our website under “Volunteer Descriptions.”
When will I receive more instructions that are specific to my volunteer role?
The Volunteer Coordinator will communicate final information, including check-in location, parking and transportation options, preparation tips and more. All volunteer training takes place onsite.
What should I wear?
All volunteers receive a volunteer shirt in their volunteer packet. The volunteer attire must be the outermost layer. While we appreciate groups and organizations wanting to represent themselves, it is vital for race officials, runners, and participants to be able to identify volunteers.
When will I receive my volunteer packet?
Volunteers will receive an email when their packet is ready for pickup.
Where should I pick up my volunteer packet?
Volunteer packet pickup is dependent upon your shift assignment. You will receive an email with pickup instructions.
Do I need to bring anything when I volunteer?
Volunteers should not bring any personal items or valuables with them while they are volunteering. However, volunteers should bring what they need to take care of themselves for their shift (i.e.: extra snacks, jackets/layers, sunscreen etc.). Please check with your Volunteer Coordinator for any additional items they may suggest bringing with as each role and location has different needs or resources.
How long is a typical shift?
The runners need Volunteer support throughout the entire event day and need every helping hand possible. Volunteers assist an average ~3 hours, however some positions require longer shifts to ensure support for every runner and their huge accomplishment of finishing the race.
What if I need to cancel?
If you are no longer able to fulfill your volunteer shift, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at rochesterrunningclub@gmail.com right away.
Can children volunteer?
Yes! Families, teens, and youth are welcome to join the excitement that comes along with race weekend. HOWEVER, all children must register as volunteers and for the most enjoyable experience, we encourage that children be at least 14; some jobs allow children 10+, WITH the supervision of a parent or guardian. Please see job descriptions for age guidelines in those roles. Groups of children should have supervision throughout their volunteering by a parent/guardian at an adult to child ratio of 10:1, respectively.
Can I count my volunteer hours for school or towards a project?
If your volunteer hours need to be counted towards school, work, or another organization—you must bring a copy of your program’s volunteer tracking sheet and will need to check-in and check- out with the Volunteer Coordinator to sign off on volunteer hours.
